Measurement

This term we are learning about measurement in maths.
We have made clocks and we practice each day telling the time using hours, half hours and this week starting to learn about quarter past and quarter to.
We are also learning about length, Mrs Innes measured us all in cm and at the end of the year we are going to see how much we have grown. Last Friday we brought our teddies to school and measured them using multi link blocks. We had to estimate (a careful guess) how many we thought before we measured. Mrs Innes was very proud of how our estimates were very close.

Exploring Painting

This term we are going to be exploring painting.
Today we learnt about brushes, how to hold them, choosing a size brush for what we want to do, and caring for the bristles by not pushing them back too hard.
We then chose a brush to make appropriate lines and dots. Thick lines, thin lines, dots, zig zags and waves. We can control the brush by holding it correctly and add paint by layering if we need more.

Bullying Free NZ Week - 16-20 May 2016

At Hoon Hay we aim to promote students’ understanding that everyone has a role to play in preventing and responding to bullying situations. To reinforce this message we would like you, as parents/caregivers, to take a look at the links below and have a conversation with your child/ren. This fits in nicely with the Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme.

For more information, please check out the resources on-line by clicking here and also have a look at Officer Duncan's Top Tips To Combat Bullying

We all want our children to be safe and happy at school. Our goal is to ensure that it is safe for children to:

Stand up and speak up together,
because we’re worth it.

If these conversations prompt anything you are concerned about, as always, the Hoon Hay School door is always open. We want to know!

Keeping Ourselves Safe

We had Constable Ross come to school to talk with us about keeping ourselves safe. We learnt that our body is our own, that strangers come in all shapes and sizes, they are people we don't know. That we need to know our address and phone number in case we are lost and need help. And that there are good secrets and bad secrets.

Origin Sport and Kelly Sport

Last week when the Year 4's were on camp we got to go out for their Origin Sport lesson. We had a lot of fun and roller dodge ball has become a class favourite. We showed good sportsmanship and fair play by making sure everyone was having fun.

Later in the week we had a Kelly sport lesson were we learnt some relay games Mrs Innes played when she was little, Tunnel Ball and Under and Over. We also did some soccer skills as relays.
